50 books #39

Ikegami describes one multi-section binding in his book. It fascinated me because you will start sewing at a middle section in stead of an end-section of the book. Further on the sewing has no chain-stitch or other link-stitches like a common binding has, you will just sew up and down two times to attach the sections to each other.

This binding is unique in the way there is no Chinese prototype of it. Retchõsõ is developed in the same Heian period as the butterfly book and was used often to bind literature and poetry. Because of the time-consuming procedure this binding is hardly ever used nowadays.

Like the coptic books there's no binding marge and the book can lay completely flat. And like the coptic the book is a bit 'wonky' due to the open spine. The nice looks of such an open spine is attractive, that said I can imagine bookbinders developed a closed spine during the centuries followed. It makes the book far more sturdy and durable.

The book is a 5 section one, the outer sections are covered. For the covers I used one of the long neglected homemade paste papers from my stash, it felt good to let is see some daylight :)
