boeken
books

...for the 'deze is ook leuk' team.

˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚
waarschuwing: lange lappen tekst in aantocht...
warning: long pieces of text ahead...
˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚

the upmost bead is a heart or star, the other ones are 'standard' beads

It was on my mind for so long now, to send the link searchers (or better call them finders!) a little something. Free style japanese bindings are fun to make, that's why I fiddled a little with one of the patterns and had a go.
almost a shame not to keep the books together ;)

Four books sized 6"x13.5" and one sized 6"x9.5", that's not because one of them didn't a good enough job (quite the contrary), it's because of the special kind of paper in this book. I started with just enough paper for 4 books and had to decide to go out buying more or to choose another kind of paper. I opted the latter choice and instead of a 300gsm Canson Mixed Media paper the fifth book got 130gsm Simili Japon for the pages. Why I choose for that kind of paper is a story on itself, to be told another time soon...
educational interlude following now :)
Simili Japon is a very smooth off white paper. Perfect to use for writing, calligraphy, drawing, stamping, screen printing and other 'dry techniques'. When ever you see it: buy and give it a try, it comes in two weights 135gsm and 225 gsm, it has two deckled edges from the machine. The sheets are odd sized, hence the size of the book. I've been told it's developed in the 19th century to mimic japanese paper, hideous failure, but with a very beautiful paper as result.

The books are covered with a various choice of Aziatic flower paper (i don't know the brand or other description) and a bright colored fiber paper for fly leaves and paste down. Paper on the hinges can be vulnerable, hence the hinges are enforced with Tyvek underneath the paper. Probably the stuff will withstand the end of times, so that's covered.

I forgot to make close-up photos, ah well...

I used beads on books  before ('50 books' #14, 15,16,17) and Anneke's japanese binding reminded me of my stash. I thought it fits nicely with the diamond sewing, as a bonus the beads keep the thread on the spine from moving to all sides. The uppermost bead on the books is star or heart shaped, I forgot to make close-ups (I'm hoping the receipients will :))

The books didn't fit into the standard sized book boxes, so it was improvising for safe shipping.

Blowed the dust from the old typewriter, it was fun to make labels with it (and each one has two typos at least...)

mijn kerstkaarten
my christmas cards

merry christmas [all the best for 2012]
This year a joint venture with a photoprinting service :) I drew and colored the text, joining in LetterLAB I couldn't think of anything else to do... Than I scanned the design and sent it out to be printed on cards. Tim Holtz' snow flurries cutting die is used to spice up the folded edge of the card.

A few photos to show how to change the fold into a Fold.

First I cut a template from cardboard to position the die easily (i wanted to do 80 cards). I made the template on size to keep the largest snowflake on the fold, that way the card is a bit sturdier.

De vlokken losgesneden met een hobbymes
Cut the snowflurries loose with a craftknife

After a seventy cards the ejecting rubber was indented so much I had to use a skewer to free the points of some of the flakes. A piece craft foam helped me to easily loosen the last few cards from the cutting die. I think that this is great performance only having some extra work with the last few ones, knowing i used heavy weight card and the design of the die is rather intricate.

En uiteindelijk heb je dan dit:
And than you end up with this:

***
watercolor paper - mechanical pencil HB 0.3 & 0.7 - eraser (lots!)
PITT-pen black S - Distress inks: festive berries, evergreen bough, iced spruce, broken china
Derwent 4B pencil - paper stump

neem wat je nodig hebt #2
take what you need #2

This time postcard size, less words (lack of space), but I added *fun*, a bit joy/joking can come in handy for everyone, not?  And I was courageous enough to work a bit more 'loosely', no guidelines!

I've added perforation lines between the 'tear-off words' with a Tonic perforator, the tool was happy to see light again :)

hiep hiep hoera
hip hip hurray

A fun technique I've been told by Eefke Moes, it's not in her book (which is sold out), but so very fun and easy to do though.

Color een piece of cardstock or any other firm paper, Eefke used soft pastel, I used Distress ink.
Take a shallow tray with some water, drip a few drops nail polish on the water surface in one or more colors. The polish will spread and form a film.
Now scoop under the nailpolish film with your paper and bring it up.
Let dry. If you want you can add add some coats Diamond Glaze (or Glossy Accents) when the piece is completely dry.

Inking a rubber stamp with a Sharpie marker worked just fine to make an impression on the Glossy Accents coating.

Nu op zoek naar gekke kleuren nagellak...
Now I'm on the lookout for odd colors nail polish...

ietwat vissig
something fishy

Spent an afternoon cardmaking at Karin's last week. She has some fabulous stamps and coloring pencils, I was a happy camper using her collection :)

This batch is totally inspired by Godelieve's work: 'simple summer set'. The 'fat' frame I saw at Cynnie's first and have to admit her's are much more elegant: 'flower power'
I used watercolor paper, fish stamps by Darkroom Door and Derwent coloring pencils.

een maand - een boek 5
a month - a book 5

Vandaag mei/juni-boekendag: 'maze' oftewel 'doolhof'. Uiteindelijk gekozen voor 'PAS: plain and simple'.

Nooooo! we didn't quit! Of course the bookmaking continues, only on a lower pace due to summertime. To make things easier Anneke and I decided to combine may/june and july/augustus.
Today is may/june-book day: 'maze'. My theme this time and I was sure of thinking up an easy one, how difficult can it be to fold and cut a sheet of paper? Well, it starts with chóosing paper, than whích cutting design, than whát content, than hów to write the content and lastly hów to store. In short a lot of choices to bide time on for a professional doubter like yours truly. At last chose to make it 'PAS: plain and simple'

A tribute to the seasons. Four haiku (source:'Haiku een jonge maan'), one for each season, written in acrylic ink on vellum.

Title written on start and middle pages, due to the folds and cuttings it becomes two books connected in the middle. The one side has spring and summer, the other fall and winter.

anneke's mango fool challenge

Anneke ('some fiddling on the kitchen table') heeft een leuke kleuruitdaging op haar blog, met prijzen :)
Anneke ('some fiddling on the kitchen table') has a fun color challenge going on at her blog, with prizes :)

Mijn mango is een tikje oranje uitgevallen...
My mango is a bit overly orange...

The bird is inspired by the birds in the prize package. It's drawn on the back of painted cardstock and cut out. The cardstock is prepped with acrylic paint and white craft glue to achieve a crackled surface. The link to this technique can be found via 'deze is ook leuk'.

works like a charm and is easy to do too. On the left thick layers of glue and paint are used, on the right thin layers.

Thanks Anneke for this fun challenge :)

bedankt
thanks

The local drugstore had some polymer stamp sets, rather nice ones, so I set my bank account a few euro back:)

Totally different style than the stamps in yesterdays post, let's just say I'm versatile...

These stamps lend themselves to use on simple and quick cards. Heart stamped in Barn Door Red Distress ink, Dutch sentiment ('thanks') with India Black. Lines drawn with a Pitt pen.

voorjaarskaart
spring card

The sprouting leaf colors are so delicate, here I used the colors of the maple as a lead.

Next weekend is ArtSpecially event weekend and I'm checking my stash of cardstock. There's need for some nice bright colors, don't you agree?
