boekbindles
bookbinding class

In the bookbinding class I attend we mostly learn the 'classical' bindings. This autumn season we worked on the monastic(?) binding. It's the way old bibles are bound, beautiful when good performed, hard work for an apprentice :)

Quarter leather binding. The leather is pasted on the back, that's why the cords where I sewed on are visible.

I have to practice a lot on handsewn headbands and my paring knife made a left turn to many, when you take a close look you will see some naked wood...

The wooden boards are covered with leather and paper. The edges are bevelled for a nice view. The hinges are located on the inside, modern books have their hinges and groove visible on the outside.

The golden shine on the cover paper is so lovely. I've purchased it in France years ago.
