limp bindings from
the vatican library

At the BookArts Forum we had a swap with Limp Bindings from the Vatican Library by Monica Langwe as guidance. The participants made each their own version of one of the books.

Alleen mijn materiaalkeuze is nogal anders.

I chose the book on page 44/45 ARCH.CAP.S.Pietro Quietanze 15, a register of receipts from the years 1487 and 1488, and stayed close to the description. Just the materials are really different. The 15th century original is made of parchment, I used rubber foil. On the picture below you can see well the structure of the rubber (tip of the day: this rough rubber is ideal to open stubborn mason jar lids)

All turn-ins are fastened with leather tackets. In the description there is word that there are marks on the cover of a metal fastener. I decided to make a closure on a strap.

The bookblock is fastened on leather squares with paper layers underneath, like the original. For the photo I peeled the leather back a bit.

Nog wat sfeerbeelden om af te sluiten :)
To finish some action photos :)

The bookblock is nice on it's own too

Years back I made one of the books from Moniva Langwe's Limp Bindings from Tallinn: click. I'm counting on it that it won't take this long again till I make one of the other 'limp' books...

  7. The book looks great! I like that you added the closure, and how you fastened it to the cover. I never used leather tackets before, how was you experience with these? Do they hold well enough? Well, probably, otherwise you would probably have found a different solution.
Over at the book arts forum you mentioned that the rubber won't remember a fold. I like your solution to teach it how to behave, very fitting to just add more tackets.

Oh, and wonderful pictures of your workplace!

Prachtig!
    Heel mooi gefotografeerd allemaal!
