Van boeken maken komt nog steeds niets terecht, het papier en karton ligt buiten bereik, net als het meeste van m'n andere boekbindspullen. Ik wordt er een beetje iebelig van :)

Still on a bookbinding withdrawal, paper, board and tools are out of reach, i'm getting itchy :)


Wat ik wel had liggen waren wat restjes gekleurd garen, geprinte boekjes van Free for All en karton dat eigenlijk de papierbak in ging. Daar moest ik maar even mijn ontwenningsverschijnselen te lijf mee gaan...

To cure some of the symptoms i made a little book with some leftover thread, cereal box cardstock and printed booklets from Free for All.





Het zijn leuke inspirerende kunstwerkjes en ik was eigenlijk op zoek naar een mooie manier om ze samen te bewaren. Misschien verzin ik later nog iets anders...
These booklets are fun and inspirational and I was looking for a nice way to save them. That will be for a later date, for now this will do...




De instantboekjes van FfA heben niet allemaal hetzelfde formaat, de landkaart, het postcardboekje en de pizza hebben een plekje in het omslag gekregen.

The FfA booklets have different sizes and formats. Map, Postcard and Pizza all got a place in the cover.

I have to list 7 bloggers for the Kreative Award and 8 for the Karma Award. I did a quick calculation to see how many that will be when I add, multiply and middle those numbers and came to something uncountable (never a strong side of me, calculations *lol*).

Well, most awards are around for several months or even longer, so it's hard to find a blog that isn't awarded yet. That's why i'm dedicating these two very nice gestures to all creative bloggers in my blogroll (have to update that one...) and Google-reader... in short, i'm just a 'no-good' in forwarding awards...

Nog steeds in de enkele vellen en nog steeds in het hergebruik :)
Still into single sheets and still into re-use :)

Van een blok aquarelpapier had ik de het grijsbord over en dat gebruikte ik voor- en achterplat. Voor de pagina's heb ik dun karton gebruikt dat tussen formulieren zat als opvulling.
Grey board saved from a block of watercolour paper and that's what I used for the front and back board. The pages are from paperboard that acted as a filler between forms at work.



Het naaiwerk lijkt erg op het vorige boek en is veeeeeeel beter gelukt :) De voor- en achterkant zijn op een andere manier bevestigd en dat heeft me wel wat hoofdbrekens gekost. De beschrijving in het boek klopte niet (volgens mij dan, het zou natuurlijk ook wel aan mijn (on)kunde kunnen liggen... mwaaaa *lol*) en daar heb ik een oplossing op bedacht die er redelijk uitzag.
De sewing is almost the same as last book and much much better done :) Front and back are attached differently wich costed me some struggling. The instructions didn't work (for me that is, it could be my skills or lack of it of course... mwaaa *lol*) anyhow, i worked around it and in the end the result is acceptable.




Mijn nieuwe hoekronder heeft prima dienst gedaan, al is 3mm bord ongeveer het maximum wat het ding aan kan.
My new corner rounder did a good job, but 3 mm (appr 3/32") board is about the max it can bite.

50 books #29

Nu bijna al m'n spullen opgeruimd zijn met de verbouwing in zicht kan ik alleen boeken maken zonder lijmwerk. Het gaat sneller en dat komt goed uit. Zo loop ik misschien nog een beetje de 'achterstand' in... 21 boeken en 16 weken te gaan voor het voltooien van m'n project.
At the moment almost all my crafting tools and materials are put away due to a reconstruction to our house that starts next week. The only books I can make are glueless and that's good because these are quicker to make most of the time... 21 books and 16 weeks to go until my project is finished.

Hergebruik - Re-use

Golfkarton heeft altijd wel een aantrekkingskracht op me, het is superlicht en kan prima als basis dienen voor mixedmedia werk. Veel golfkartonnen dozen hebben dan ook nog eens fraaie opdruk als bonus.

Corrugated cardboard always appeals to me, it's super light and can act nicely as a canvas for mixed media work. A lot of corrugated cardboard boxes have nice print as bonus, which makes it even more fun to use.



Om de snede mooi scherp te krijgen heb ik alles met de hand gesneden. Met de guillotine plette het karton teveel: niet mooi. Dat is dan gelijk het grootste nadeel van dit materiaal, het is wel kwetsbaar, maar dat kan ook weer leuke verrassingen geven.

To get a nice cutting edge I cut all pages by hand. Using a guillotine make the board flatten: not a nice sight. This shows the greatest disadvantage of the material, it's kind of vulnerable, which can of course act as a nice surprice in itselves.




Hier en daar heb ik een steekje laten vallen. Volgende keer beter ;)

I forgot a linking stitch in a few places. Next time better :)



Weer een binding die vlak open ligt, handig om te schilderen, tekenen en schrijven. De perforatie zat al op de doos, zo gaaf.

This is another binding which lay flat when open, handy for painting, drawing and writing. The pierced pattern was already on the box, so cool.

Ik zie mezelf binnenkort nog wel meer dozen ontmantelen...

I can see myself dismantle more boxes in the near future...

De eerste langsteekbinding die ik maakte (zie boek nr.4), naaide ik zonder ook maar enig idee van waar ik mee bezig was, bij deze versie heb ik braaf de instructies gevolgd ;P
Sewing my first longstitched binding (take a look at book #4) I hadn't a clue what i was doing, this time I was a good girl and followed instructions ;P



De pagina's zijn resten van katernen die ik van een vorig boek had gesneden. Het bandje is gesneden uit een ansichtkaart die we ooit kregen na een donatie aan het Rode Kruis, de tekst is gestempeld (Stampotique) en met een oranje poeder (Adirondack) geëmbossed. Meestal stempel ik wel met een pigmentinkt voor het embossen, maar het doosje dye-inkt lag voor het grijpen en het werkte best...
The pages are leftovers cut from sections from a previous book. The cover is cut from a postcard we got from the Red Cross when me made a donation once. Text is stamped (Stampotique) and heat embossed (Adirondack). I usually grab a pigment ink for heat embossing, this time it's a dye, the pad was within reach and the ink did the job just right...

Dit boek heeft wat hoofdbrekens gekost, het duurde een poos voor ik de slag van het naaipatroon pakken had. En nu ik het door heb begrijp ik niet waar het probleem zat ;)
This book took me some time before I got the hang of the sewing pattern. And now it's finished I cannot see why it was so hard ;)



Ik heb er geen platten aangemaakt. Ze lagen wel klaar, maar zonder vond ik het boek er specialer uitzien.
I didn't attach boards. I had the boards ready to attach, but liked the special look of the book without them better.



Als het open ligt zie je het mooie binnenpatroon. Losse vellen op deze manier naaien geeft een heel ander uiterlijk dan het eerste losse vellen boek dat ik maakte.
When it lays open you see the nice inner pattern. Single sheets sewing this way give a completely other look than the first single sheets book I did.

De afgelopen twee zaterdagen heb ik bij Nina Judin in Amsterdam aan een koptische binding gewerkt. Nina is een bron van kennis en kunde, ik kan iedereen echt aanraden daar eens een workshop te gaan volgen. De eerste zaterdag hebben we de katernen gevouwen en afgeperst. Verder de platten op maat gemaakt, bekleed met Fins rendierleer en met Nina's handgemaakte gereedschap voorzien van een eenvoudige blinddruk.

The last two saturdays I spend at Nina Judin's in Amsterdam learning the coptic binding. Nina is a wealth of knowledge, both theoretical and practical. I can highly recommend following a class with her. The first saturday we folded and pressed the sections. We made the boards to size, covered these in Finnish reindeer leather and blind tooled a pattern with Nina's handmade tools.

De tweede zaterdag was het gaten prikken en naaien geblazen. De katernen naaien ging me betrekkelijk makkelijk af, ze zouden wat strakker aan de platten kunnen zitten, dat is iets om een volgende keer op te letten. Het kapitaal was wat lastiger... Alle garen van het kapitaal zit nog los, dat kan dus uitgehaald en opnieuw. Is gelijk een goede oefening :) De rode die ik als eerste maakte ziet er erg 'rustiek' uit, dat moet zowiezo over en de witte is te wit, dat moet een zachtgeel worden. Dus alletwee de kapitalen gaan opnieuw...

The second saturday was dedicated to piercing holes and sewing. The section sewing went relatively easy, my book could have had some more tension on the hinges, something to think of next time. The endbands were a different story... All sewing from the endbands is still loose so I can remove it to start over. That will be good practice :) The red one I made first is very 'rustic' looking and has to be re-done for sure. The white one I want to replace by a pale yellow one, that will fit better in the overall colour scheme. So I will end up re-sewing both endbands.





Het leer is met plantaardig materiaal gekleurd en is heel erg zacht. Prachtig materiaal om mee te werken. Het garen dat ik heb gebruikt is linnen (white and yellow) en katoen (orange and red). Ik merk dat ik voor dit soort naaiwerk nu wel een voorkeur heb voor linnen. Het blijft gladder en daardoor is het patroon veel mooier te zien.

The leather is vegetable tanned and really smooth. Wonderful material to work with. The thread I used is linen (white and yelow) and cotton (orange and red). I notice i developed a preference for linen on these binding. It's smoother than cotton and that makes it show the stitching pattern much better.

En moet je eens kijken wat ik van Hilke kreeg, een van haar prachtige mini-boeken. Je kunt aan de maatverdeling op de snijmat zien hoe ieniemienie het boekje is. Ik mocht kiezen en ze vond eigenlijk dat ik het best gemaakte boekje zou moeten nemen, maar ik ben helemaal weg van deze met het handgestoken kapitaal en het leer met gaatjes patroon. Is het geen snoepie?

Now look what I got from Hilke, one of her wonderful mini-books. You can see on the measurement on the cutting matt how tiny it is. She let me choose from her collection and wanted me to get one of the 'properly' made ones, but I'm a sucker for the handmade endbands and black spotted blue leather on this one. In't it a cutie?

Zo, dat was een boel tekst voor mijn 26ste book. Ik ben niet meer op schema met de 50 boeken en weet niet zeker of dat nog snel gaat gebeuren, vakantie, verbouwing... we zullen zien :)
That was a lot of text for my 26th book. I'm not on my 50 books schedule anymore and am not sure if I will get on it soon, vacation, home-improvement... we'll see:)

moederdagcollagemother's day collage

Gisteravond een collage op een canvas afgemaakt waar ik vorig jaar aan begon. Het is wel een beetje bont geheel geworden, niet erg doordacht allemaal, maar wel leuk om te doen. De twee kindertjes zijn mijn mam en haar oudste broer. Morgen geef ik dit canvasje aan haar. Ben benieuwd wat ze er van vind :)
Yesterday I've finished this collage on a stretched canvas I started last year. It came out as a very colourful work, not very sophisticated, but lots of fun to work on. The two kids are my mom and het oldest brother. Tomorrow I will give the canvas to her. I hope she likes it :)

ik kon het niet laten om nu eens te proberen hoe Twitter in z'n werk gaat... kan ik er net bij gebruiken... ik ken er heg noch steg. Behalve Tulibri ken ik nog niemand om te volgen en niemand weet van mijn bestaan, met wie mag ik komen kwetteren? (en zo die ene volger in een stuk of 4 veranderen? *lol*) 
I couldn't resist to sign on at Twitter, just to see how things work... just what I need... another addiction...

I don't know the way things go over there and besides Tulibri no-one knows of my existence, anyone wants to twitter with me? (and change that pathetic 1 follower in a 4 or so? *lol*) My twittering is mostly in Dutch, but I will try to post some tweets in English :)

Ik had wat lieve verjaardagskaartjes nodig voor diverse nichtjes. De vogeltjes van De Creatie zijn precies schattig genoeg :)  Dank je wel Karin voor het lenen van de stempels.
I needed some cute birthdaycards for several nieces. The birdies from De Creatie have exactly the right amount of sweetness :) Thanks to Karin for letting me use her stamps.

50 books #25

Boek nummer 25 zou weer een losse vellen boek worden, deze keer genaaid op koord. Ben al een poos aan het tobben en het neemt tijd als je eigenwijs bent. Volgens Keith Smith's instructies heb je eigenlijk een naaibank nodig. Hij heeft gelijk... goede spanning houden is zonder naaibank erg, erg lastig :D  Ik tob natuurlijk gewoon door, het zal uiteindelijk wel boek 30 ofzo worden *lol*

Book #25 should have been one more single sheets one, this time sewn on cords. Struggling for a while now made me conclude Keith Smith is right. It's lots more easier when you use a sewing bench. Keeping tension on the cords is very very hard without one :D For the time being I struggle on, when finished it will be book #30 or so *lol*

Dus, voor wat wel nummer 25 is geworden heb ik het mezelf maar eens makkelijk gemaakt. Loonzakjes, gelijmde rug (Lumbeck) en een bruine zak als omslag.

So, for what did count now as book #25 I have gone the easy road. Envelopes, glued spine (perfect bound?) and a brown paper bag as cover. 






Vorige week heb ik weer eens een stempel gegutst. Mijn eerste woord :)

Last week I carved a new stamp. My first word :)
