Dat was ik al zo heel lang van plan, de linkenzoekers (of beter vinders) eens een aardigheidje te sturen. De vrije stijl Japanse binding vond ik leuk om te doen, dus heb ik een van de patronen een beetje aangepast en kon ik van start.

It was on my mind for so long now, to send the link searchers (or better call them finders!) a little something. Free style japanese bindings are fun to make, that's why I fiddled a little with one of the patterns and had a go.

Vier boeken van 15x34,5cm en een van 15x24,5cm en dat is niet omdat een van hen niet haar best doet (integendeel), maar omdat zij een speciale papiersoort voor de pagina's kreeg. Het begon met precies genoeg papier voor 4 boeken en toen was het of bij gaan halen of iets anders kiezen. Die laatste optie is het geworden en i.p.v. 300 grams Canson MixedMedia papier ging er 130 grams Simili Japon in dat 5de boek. Waarom het juist die papiersoort is geworden, is weer een heel ander verhaal, dat komt binnenkort een keer aan bod...

Simili Japon is een supergladde off-white papiersoort. Heel mooi om op te schrijven, tekenen, stempelen, printen, zeefdruk en wat je maar kunt bedenken aan min of meer 'droge' technieken. Als je het ooit ziet: kopen en uitproberen, het is er in twee diktes 130 en 225 grams en het heeft aan twee kanten een soort scheprand van de machine. De vellen hebben een wat incourante maat, vandaar het formaat van dat boek. Ik heb me laten vertellen dat het in de 19de eeuw ontwikkeld is als poging om Japans papier na te maken, jammerlijk mislukt, maar wel met heel mooi papier als resultaat.

Four books sized 6"x13.5" and one sized 6"x9.5", that's not because one of them didn't a good enough job (quite the contrary), it's because of the special kind of paper in this book. I started with just enough paper for 4 books and had to decide to go out buying more or to choose another kind of paper. I opted the latter choice and instead of a 300gsm Canson Mixed Media paper the fifth book got 130gsm Simili Japon for the pages. Why I choose for that kind of paper is a story on itself, to be told another time soon...

educational interlude following now :)
Simili Japon is a very smooth off white paper. Perfect to use for writing, calligraphy, drawing, stamping, screen printing and other 'dry techniques'. When ever you see it: buy and give it a try, it comes in two weights 135gsm and 225 gsm, it has two deckled edges from the machine. The sheets are odd sized, hence the size of the book. I've been told it's developed in the 19th century to mimic japanese paper, hideous failure, but with a very beautiful paper as result.

Ik heb geen echte detailfoto's gemaakt, gewoon niet bij stilgestaan...

De boeken zijn bekleed met een sortering Aziatisch bloemenpapier (weet geen merk of andere omschrijving) op de band en fel gekleurd vezelpapier als schutblad binnenin. Omdat papier op de scharnieren wat kwetsbaar kan zijn, zijn de scharnieren onder het papier verstevigd met Tyvek. Waarschijnlijk doorstaat dat spul het einde der tijden nog, dus dat zit helemaal snor.


The books are covered with a various choice of Aziatic flower paper (i don't know the brand or other description) and a bright colored fiber paper for fly leaves and paste down. Paper on the hinges can be vulnerable, hence the hinges are enforced with Tyvek underneath the paper. Probably the stuff will withstand the end of times, so that's covered.

I forgot to make close-up photos, ah well...

Kralen op boeken deed ik al eerder ('50 boeken' nr 14, 15, 16, 17) en Anneke's japanse binding met kralen herinnerde me daar weer aan. Bij dit ruitennaaiwerk vond ik het wel mooi passen, bovendien houden de kralen het garen op de rug netjes op de plaats. De bovenste kraal is op alle boeken hart-  of stervormig, ik vergat detailfoto's te maken (ik hoop op de ontvangsters :))


I used beads on books  before ('50 books' #14, 15,16,17) and Anneke's japanese binding reminded me of my stash. I thought it fits nicely with the diamond sewing, as a bonus the beads keep the thread on the spine from moving to all sides. The uppermost bead on the books is star or heart shaped, I forgot to make close-ups (I'm hoping the receipients will :))

De boeken pasten niet in standaard boekendozen, dus het werd improviseren om ze veilig te versturen. Weet iemand een adres waar ze 'boekendozen' verkopen, iets zoals Hema de fotoboeken in verzendt?


The books didn't fit into the standard sized book boxes, so it was improvising for safe shipping.

De oude typmachine weer eens van stal gehaald, was leuk om de labels te typen (met op alle labels minstens 2 tikfouten, die typediploma's van vroeger zijn ook niks waard...)


Blowed the dust from the old typewriter, it was fun to make labels with it (and each one has two typos at least...)

De kerstvakantie zit er weer op, vanaf vandaag weer gewoon aan 't werk :) Wel alvast creatieve plannen voor het nieuwe jaar, dat eraan komt snellen, in werking gesteld...
Christmas holidays flew by, as from today it's back to my usual work schedule :) Creative plans for the new year that's right around the corner are running though...

Voor onze gastheer met kerst namen we nog een aardigheidje mee, aanmaakvlechten. Hoeft hij een paar keer geen aanmaakhout te hakken voor als de open haard aangestoken wordt.

We brought a small gift for our host at christmas day, kindling braids. Now he has a few days off from cutting kindling for their fireplace.

Bij een tuincentrum vond ik dit leuke smalle mandje, de vlechten passen perfect.

At a garden center I found this fun skinny basket, the braids fit perfectly.

Een paar boeken heel simpel ingepakt.

Op bruin inpakpapier met plakband een ster gemaakt en een ster van papier erop geplakt, daarboven een stokje bestempeld met tekst en met slagerstouw vastgemaakt.
Made a star from tape on brown wrapping paper and glued a paper star on it, text stamped on a stick and fastened with some bakers twine.

Met plakband letters gemaakt en een splitpen (merry christmas) met foamtape opgeplakt, simpeler kan haast niet :)

boekenlegger bookmark

Tijdens de kersttijd zijn er ook verjaardagen, voor een van de feestvarkens heb ik een boek gekocht en maakte er een gekke boekenlegger bij (helemaal geïnspireerd door deze van polymeer klei).
During christmas time there are birthdays to celebrate too. I bought a book for one of the birtdaygirls and made a funny bookmark to go with it (totally inspired by this one made from polymer clay).

Benen getekend, gekleurd met stiften en uitgeknipt.

De benen op de bladwijzer geplakt, die heeft aan de binnenkant magneettape gekregen waar washitape overheen geplakt zit.
The legs are glued onto the bookmark, which has magnetic tape covered with washi tape.

Dit jaar in samenwerking met de Hema :) Ik tekende en kleurde de tekst, na LetterLAB kon ik niks anders bedenken... Het ontwerp gescand en kaarten laten afdrukken. Daarna de sneeuwvlokkenstans van Tim Holtz gebruikt om de vouwrand op te leuken.
This year a joint venture with a photoprinting service :) I drew and colored the text, joining in LetterLAB I couldn't think of anything else to do... Than I scanned the design and sent it out to be printed on cards. Tim Holtz' snow flurries cutting die is used to spice up the folded edge of the card.

Eerst uit karton een mal gesneden om de stans makkelijk te kunnen positioneren (ik wilde 80 kaarten doen). Ik maakte de mal zo dat de grootste sneeuwvlok bovenaan vast bleef zitten, zo bleef de kaart wat steviger.
First I cut a template from cardboard to position the die easily (i wanted to do 80 cards). I made the template on size to keep the largest snowflake on the fold, that way the card is a bit sturdier.

Na een zeventig kaarten was het rubber in de puntjes zover ingedeukt dat er een satehpen aan te pas moest komen om sommige sneeuwvlokken los te krijgen. Een stukje hobbyfoam hielp me om de laatste kaarten toch nog makkelijk uit de stansmal los te krijgen. Ik vind dat wel een pluim waard, het zijn nogal dikke kaarten en dan pas bij de laatste wat extra werk om een paar van de gedetailleerde vormen los te krijgen.
After a seventy cards the ejecting rubber was indented so much I had to use a skewer to free the points of some of the flakes. A piece craft foam helped me to easily loosen the last few cards from the cutting die. I think that this is great performance only having some extra work with the last few ones, knowing i used heavy weight card and the design of the die is rather intricate.

kado's inpakken wrapping presents

Vandaag een paar kerstpresentjes ingepakt en eindelijk eens die bruine papieren zakken gebruikt. Wat leuks erop en het ziet er best wel kerstig uit.
Today I wrapped some christmas gifts and finally used the brown paper bags in stash. Some fun items added and the bags look nice and christmassy.

Alle zes net even anders.

100 jaar geleden 100 years ago

Net las ik in de krant dat het 100 jaar geleden is dat Amundsen als eerste de Zuidpool bereikte. Een maand voor Scott. Van een groepsfoto van Scott maakte ik in 2007 inchies, een mooie gelegenheid om die weer eens op te diepen :) Jammer dat de scan niet groter is, toen wist ik echt niet veel van digitaal werk...
Today i read in the paper it is 100 years ago today Amundsen reached the South Pole. A month before Scott. I used a groups photo from Scott's to make inchies back in 2007. Today is a good day to review these :)
A pity the scan is only this small size, I didn't know much about digital photos and images in those days...

't is net een klein fabriekje hier, boeken, kerstkaarten (ooohhh weer op 't laatste moment), kortom geen tijd voor 't bloggen...
it's like a small factory here, books, christmas cards (ooowww last minute again), in short no spare time for blogging...

Voor ons achtste boek spraken Anneke en ik af een Japanse binding te maken. Nu zijn er verschillende officiële naaipatronen bekend, maar wij gingen voor een vrij werk geïnspireerd door de voorbeelden op 'becca making faces'.
De mijne is een 'spin-off' van haar 'maple leaves' en het lijkt wel iets op kerststerren in een rijtje (toch een beetje, niet?). Een volgende keer kies ik een van de asymetrische patronen, die zien er ook wel heel gaaf uit.
For our eight book Anneke and i agreed to make a Japanese stab binding. There are several official sewing patterns known, but we chose a free-style one inspired by the patterns 'becca makes faces' shares.
Mine is a spin-off of her 'maple leaves' and resembles Christmas stars a little (it does, doesn't it?). A next time I'll try my hand on one of the asymetric patterns, those look cool too.

Zwart, bijna wit en rood. Het decoratieve papier is van een groot vel dat al jaren in huis ligt. Doordat ik van Anneke een label kreeg van hetzelfde papier, schoot het me weer te binnnen dat dat er ook nog was...
Black, off-white and red. The decorative paper is from a large sheet in stash. Anneke gave me a tag made from that same paper and that reminded me to start using it...

Het boek is liggend A5-formaat (oblong), door de brede naairand bleef er een bijna vierkant werkblad voor de pagina's over. De pagina's zijn Canson 300grams mixed media papier. Tussen de pagina's extra strookjes als opdikking, zo kan het ook als fotoboek of plakboek gebruikt.
The book is landscape A5-sized, due to the wide sewing edge there are almost square sized pages left to use inside. The pages are 300gsm (140 lbs) Canson mixed media paper I've added extra strips to the spine for a swell, that way it can be used as a photo album or scrapbook too.

Sommige naaigaten moesten zo vaak gepasseerd, dat er een tangetje aan te pas kwam om de naald door te trekken. En dan is het ook nog de sport zo te naaien dat je niet door een vorige draad heen steekt.
Some sewing holes are passed so many times pliers came at rescue to pull the needle through. And 'en route' trying to avoid piercing previous sewn threads, which is a sport in itself.

Het naaipatroon op voor- en achterkant ziet er precies hetzelfde uit. Het vogelzegel en de richting van de letters op het papier geven aan wat de voorkant is.
The sewing pattern on front and back looks exactly the same. The bird seal and the alignment of the text are the indication for the front side.

Binnenin 'bloemistengaas', iets anders in de goede kleur rood was hier ten huize niet voorhanden -ik had me nu eenmaal voorgenomen te werken met spullen uit de voorraad. Er was ook nog dat plan om het rode gaas als extra schutblad mee te naaien, en prompt helemaal vergeten. Pas toen ik de foto's zag begon het te dagen...
Inside 'florists gauze', the only material in the proper color red available in the house -alas, I did promise myself to use only items from stash. There was this plan to sew fly leaves in the book from this gauze too, and promply forgot it. It only dawned on me when I saw the photos back...
