This year's advent period I'm altering 24 matchboxes inspired by Paperiaarre. Sadly, after four years in a row making advent matchboxes, Kaija (Paperiaarre) decided to take a break this year.

Here's Kaija's comment on yesterday's box. She provided links to her previous matchboxes (I've added her blogname in the links), be sure to take a look, her work is wonderful!:

"Thanks so much for the link, Dymphie! I did this four years in a row, so it was high time I took a break. Here's a set of links to my past advent calendars for your readers unfamiliar with my work :)
Paperiaarre 2012
Paperiaarre 2011
Paperiaarre 2010
Paperiaarre 2009 (this year it's just individual posts. still sad I missed taking a photo of the first group and now they're already spread out around the world.)"

Thanks for your nice comment and direct links Kaija, you made my day :)

hoe maak je een 'tape-mesje'
how to make a 'tape cutter'

To tear tape is fun, sometimes however you want to position (in particular double-sided) tape very accurate and then this small tool is a helpful device.

't Is eenvoudig zelf te maken, men neme:

  • stukje schuurpapier
  • lijm of kit

It's eay to make one, you'll need:

  • an end piece of a 'snap-off' blade from the 'sharp thingy cemetery'
(such a piece is never been used, it's still really sharp, which is the point, so be sure to be careful not to cut yourself)
  • an mdf left-over piece
  • sandpaper
  • glue or kit
  • washi tape to personalize your new tool

Spread a tin even layer kit on the mdf and push the blade on it

Spread some kit on the sandpaper and attach on the mdf cube too

Let dry under some weight (more easy: a small glue clamp)

I didn't have something smaller at hand, so it was a balancing act with this huge weight :)

Nou zo:
And how to use such a cutter? Well, like this:

Don't forget to make a nice box for the new tool. You don't want to test the sharpness of the blade on your fingers, trust me on that...

I think these cutters are really handy. I can hardly imagine to go without one ever since I used a cutter like this in a workshop some years ago :)

in de bieb
in the library

When you follow my blog's FB-page (which is in Dutch only, sorry) you might have noticed it :) A few of my handmade books are showcased in a small local public library.

Looks nice not? I'm rather proud of it :) It's a pity I made so few new books this year...

For the occasion I created a QR-code for my blog, seemed kind of cool to me :)

Scan the code and a visit to my blog with your (smart) phone is quite easy now (I cannot do this myself as my phone is one of the oldest around).

op m'n werktafel 23
on my worktable 23

It was some time since I shared a pic of the mess I can make my worktable. Yesterday it was worse as I pushed the jar bookbinding glue off the table, no lid on it of course, yuck.

Jawel! Daar ligt een originele Metabo handboor, superding :)
Oh yes! That's an original Metabo hand drill, love it :)

een nieuw karretje
a new trolley

The Ikea catalog arrived some time ago and the page with the trolley was ripped out immediately and placed in sight. A few, not too subtle, hints later I'm the lucky owner of yet more space to hoard stuff...

Only thing, when assembling one tiny screw was missing. So an email to customer service was in place.

And a few days later the tiny tidbit arrived on the doorstep, in a huge fun envelope, all the way from Sweden

Marleen en de boekkunstbeurs

(scroll down to the end of this post for the English summary)

Bookbinding group '14x14(21)', of which Marleen Derweduwen is a member, exhibits in the Knokke-Heist (B) Library October 1-30 and on the Book Art Show in Leiden (NL) November 2-3

eetcafe "in de blije zwanenbloem"
eatery "in the happy swan flower"

Alle tafeltjes op het terras waren bezet
All tables in the beer garden were taken

Meneer Schrokop
Mr. Guzzler

De kleine hapjes gingen hard
The bit sized snacks were most popular

Tante Knabbeltje
Aunt Munchie

Though some shouldn't eat in company

'Miss Hotlips'

I'll go and check if there are some leftovers

koning
king

Just a fun picture of the king of our pond I posted earlier on my Papieren Avonturen's Facebook page.

Wat een lange tenen, was me eerder nooit echt opgevallen...
Such long toes, I've never really noticed that before...

washi tape notitieboekjes
washi taped note books

Ik wilde een nieuw notitieboekje
I wanted a new notebook
en wel graag een vrolijke
and it had to be a cheerful one
So I looked through my stash and stumbled on a last years notebook
(and this years tape)
Cut the notebook in half and I had two :) I kept the staples that were already in the spine 'cause I'm a strong believer in not making more fuss than necessary.
(at least most of the time that is)
Plaatje gestempeld
Stamped an image
En 'k ben gaan plakken, plakken en plakken
And I went taping, taping and taping
It became one landscape and one portrait oriented version.
stamps: club scrap (2006) & stampers anonymous - india ink black - notebook & tape & clamp: hema
A little tape works wonders on such dull note books. Less than fifteen minutes hands on and you are the owner of a one of a kind notebook.
Even over papierklemmetjes...
A word about paper clamps... I'm not sure why, one way or the other always a few new ones end up in my shopping basket...

boeken over boeken
books about books

Ik trakteerde mezelf op een paar boeken
I treated myself on some books

Drie boekbindboeken bij in m'n verzameling:
Three bookbinding books added to my collection:

  • Crisscross Binding ('the secret Belgian binding') - Anne Goy (the developer of this binding)
Higly recommended when you're into this innovative binding. She describes the proces of the development since the eighties(!) and explains two variations of the binding with clear photos.
    Purchased via Lidy Schoonens (Netherlands)
  • Innovative Bookbinding: secret compartments and hidden messages - Shereen LaPlantz
There was a lot of work done before the reprint was a fact, you can read the story here: 23Sandy Gallery
Purchased via Lulu (print on demand)
  • Leather Books - Karli Frigge
Handbound(!) in a paper cover by Karli Frigge. Two leather bindings are described in text and drawings. This is how I want to make a leather book soon :)
    Purchased via John Neal (USA)
All three read from the first to last page and while reading I performed all the operations in my mind already. I'm pretty sure there will be some bumps on the road for me :)  Sure not books for beginning bookbinders, that said all are very clear to follow!

The other three books are widely available, I have feasted my eyes on all the colors in those three books and am itching to pick up some brushes and paint. Which have to wait a little as I'm started at my job again first day since 6 weeks  :)
