Deze afgelopen week:

• ruimte gemaakt in huis en hoofd
• lang vergeten spullen teruggevonden
• iets te enthousiast de fles zelfbruiner gebruikt (gelukkig alleen m'n benen ;))
• en morgen is het officieel zomer!

This past week:

• made room in house and head
• found back some long forgotten items
• used the self-tanner a bit too enthousiastic (luckily only my legs ;))
• and tomorrow summer arrives officially!

Weer iets aan kant: de scor-it lag steeds in de weg tussen de boekenpersen en is nu eindelijk opgehangen. Dat was ik al tijden van plan en nu de boormachine toch paraat was, ging dat in een moeite door.
And another thing put in place: the scor-it was laying in the way (engl.?) between the book presses and is finally hung. Something I wanted to do for ages and with the drill handy now was as good a time as any.

Een ietwat simpele constructie. Vier haken zijn genoeg om een comfortabel plekje voor de plaat te realiseren.
A somewhat straightforward construction. Four hooks are sufficient to create a comfortable place for the board.

Hij hangt aan de achterkant van m'n papier/werktafel, uit de weg en toch bij de hand. De tafel staat een stukje van het raam zodat ik er aan drie kanten bij kan, bevalt me prima.
It hangs on the backside of my paperstore/work table, out of the way yet easy to reach for. The table is placed some distance from the window, accessible from three sides, something I like a lot.

zorgelooscarefree

Een boek dat als zomerdagboek gaat dienen, 'zorgeloos' het lijkt me wel een mooi vakantiemotto.
A book dedicated to act as summer journal,  Dutch title says something as 'carefree', seems like a good vacation motto to me.

De pagina's zijn alvast zorgeloos gescheurd van een vel beschermpapier uit een bananendoos. Die bladzijden zijn in katernen gevoegd door ze een paar cm om te vouwen, als in een fotoalbum, om wat opdikking te krijgen. De voor- en achterkant bestaan uit een paar lagen handgeschept papier (al jaren geleden gemaakt), vastgezet met het garen waar ook het boek mee genaaid is.
To begin the pages are carefree torn from a large sheet 'protection' paper found in a banana shipping box. The pages are folded into sections by folding an inch of each page, somewhat as in a photo album. Front and back are formed by a few sheets handmade paper (made years ago), attached with the same thread as the book is sewn with.

Blauw gaas, blauw rubbergecoat katoenen garen, kartonnen knoop. Formaat is ong. 20x14 cm (de foto's zijn aanklikbaar).
Blue gauze, blue rubber coated cotton thread, cardboard button. Size is appr. 8x5.5" (photos are clickable).

slingergarland

Deze week komt er weer een nichtje thuis na een poos in Afrika te hebben gewerkt. Ook voor haar heb ik natuurlijk een 'welkom thuis' slinger gemaakt.
This week another one of my nieces is coming home from working in Africa. Of course I made her a 'welcome home' garland too.

Letters getekend met een mal en met acrylverf van een kleurtje voorzien. Verder met die acrylverf gestempeld en getamponeerd.

Letters are drawn with a template and painted with acrylic paint. The acrylyc paint is used for stamping and stencilling also.

Vanmiddag een ritje naar de kringloper gemaakt om spullen weg te brengen (nu nog 6 dozen uitzoekwerk te gaan). Als je daar dan zo'n schoenleest ziet staan, gaat die natuurlijk mee naar huis. Ik kan altijd wel een extra gewicht gebruiken voor het boeken maken...
This afternoon I made a trip to the thrift store to bring some goods (only 6 boxes to sort left). And when you spot a shoe last on the shelves it comes home with you, no doubt. One could always use an extra weight while making books...

boekenkastbookcase

Een goed bestede vakantiedag, nieuwe boekenkasten in elkaar gezet. Het was even afwachten of Billy bij de bestaande kast zou passen en dat valt alles mee. Ik ben nu halverwege met afnemen (dat had ik al een poosje laten zitten *lol* zie rechterhoek foto...) en boeken verplekken. Behalve de boeken in de 'oude' kast staan er ook nog wat dozen te wachten.


Ahhh... de vreugd van reorganiseren ;P


A well-spent vacation day, the new bookcase is assembled. It was 'build and see' if this Billy would fit with the existing one. And we think it works. I'm now halfway cleaning (much needed *lol* look at the right corner in the photo) and replacing books. Beside the books in the 'old' bookcase there are some boxes waiting to unpack.


Ahhh... the joy of reorganizing ;P

garen verven 3deying thread 3

Het garen verven gaat onverminderd voort. Nu ben ik slim geworden en verf proefstukjes van een meter, dat is lang genoeg om iets mee te kunnen en kort genoeg om het niet erg te vinden als de kleur iets minder fantastisch uitvalt.

The thread deying goes on. I'm becoming smart and am deying one yard at the time, that's long enough to be usable and short enough not to 'pout' when it's a colour less than fantastic.

De plaatselijke drogist had niet veel keus in kleuren. Ik heb alleen een 'ocean blue' and 'olive green' aangeschaft. Volgende keer als ik daar ben zal ik een geel kopen. En om op dat slimme terug te komen, ik probeerde natuurlijk eerst een mengsel ipv de kleuren afzonderlijk te testen. Dat leverde een blauw/groen met een grijs waas op van ondefinieerbare naam.

Toen toch maar de kleuren afzonderlijk. 

Die test leverde een olijfgroen, geheel naar verwachting en een blauw/paars. Dat was een verrassing, 'ocean blue' daar komt bij mij toch geen paars aan te pas. Maar ik zag het eigenlijk al aan het poeder, er zitten wat rode kruimels in, misschien is de vorige batch in de fabriek 'lipstick red' geweest :)

My local drugstore doesn't stock a lot of colours. I only purchased 'ocean blue' and 'olive green'. Next time I'm in the store I will buy a yellow. And to come back to miss smarty-pants, of course she had to start with mixing powders, which resulted in a unnameble blueish/greenish with a grey tone into it.

Next was to try the single colours. 

That test resulted in a olive green, as expected and a surprising blue/purple. May be it's me but 'ocean blue' in my color scheme doesn't look purple. I should have expected something happening like it because there were some red granules in the powder. It could be the previous batch in the graining machine was a 'lipstick red' :)

Je begrijpt het misschien al, het Adirondack Stream verfbad gaf niet helemaal het gewenste resultaat, of beter gezegd: helemaal niet. Na een nacht intrekken het garen uitspoelen levert een fraai grijs op. Mooi gemeleerd omdat het in strengetjes in bad was gegaan, maar wel grijs, niet het knalle turkoois dat ik voor ogen had.
Nog een paar expertimenten gedaan, korter in bad, azijnwater om uit te spoelen. Het werd wat beter maar nog niet het beoogde kleurtje.
Wat ik eerder ook nog heb gedaan is het garen over het inktkussen trekken, dan krijg je wel de goede kleur, alleen niet door en door (wat niet erg is). Maar nu wilde ik een meter of vijf doen en daar is dit geen goede methode voor. Het zou 'auw' inktkussen, 'auw' vingers zijn...


It may be clear by now, the Adirondack Stream dyeing experiment didn't give me the result I envisioned. After sitting a night rinsing the thread resulted in a nice grey colour. Variegated, due to the skeins I made, but grey, not the bright turquois I need.
Some more experimenting resulted in a better colour, but still not bright enough.
Another method I tried years ago was pulling the tread directly across the inkpad, it gives a nice colour, not through and through (which doesn't matter much) but I want to dye to much lenght to use this method. It would be 'ouch' for the inkpad, 'ouch' for my fingers..

Volgend probeersel wordt textielverf voor de handwas, ik heb groen en blauw gekocht om te mengen. Dit is leuk, juist het uitproberen van allerlei methodes vind ik super. En vertel me nu niet dat het wiel al lang is uitgevonden hè?
Next try will be with fabric dye. I bought green and blue to mix. This is so much fun, love to try all kinds of methods. And please don't tell me the wheel is long ago invented already (do you say this in english? ah well...)

Vorige week meldde ik al dat ik een cursus ebru (Turks marmeren) ga volgen bij Barbara van Stein ik heb al wat proefvelletjes mogen maken bij haar. Vanmiddag had ze een open atelier en kon iedereen die langs kwam wat uitproberen. Ik niet te lui en natuurlijk nog een vel door de bak gehaald. Kijk nu al uit naar september, dan ga ik 10 avonden aan de slag!


Last week I told that I will start taking lessons in ebru (Turkish marbling technique) with Barbara van Stein, she let me make some sheets at that time (fun!). This afternoon she had an 'open studio' and all passers by could try their hand on a sheet or two. I did one too of course. It made me longing for september even more, 10 nights of marbling ahead!

Mijn gevilte boek is nog onderweg naar het finale stadium (is dat Nederlands? *lol*), met name omdat de goede kleur garen niet voorradig was. Geen nood, dan kleuren we zelluf wel, dacht ik enthousiast.
Niet gehinderd door enige kennis op stofverfgebied heb ik een lepel zout (ik herinner me zoiets van wasmachine kledingverfavonturen uit een ver ver verleden), wat water en een flinke knijp Adirondack 'Stream' in een zakje gedaan. Vijf meter linnen garen erbij en nu ligt het op tafel te 'incuberen' tot morgen. Dan spoel ik het uit. Ik ben benieuwd... 
Vorig jaar heb ik ook garen gekleurd, met pure inkt en ik vond het niet nodig te spoelen. Maar ja, het blijft dan alsmaar kleur afgeven en dat is toch niet zo mooi hoor op witte pagina's. Les geleerd: spoelbeurt is nodig.


My felted book is stil a work in progress, due to no thread in stash in the right colour. Now I'm trying to dye it myself.
No clue on what I'm doing here, I recall adding salt when dyeing cloth in the washing machine back in the eighties or so. Here I added a small spoonful salt, a splash water and a generous spritz Adirondack 'Stream'. Five yard linen thread in the bag and now it's 'incubating' on the table until tomorrow. Than I will rinse and see what (or if something) happened.
Last year I dyed thread too, but that was a small disaster. I did use the ink as is and I didn't find it necessary to rinse. So it kept smudging on white pages, yuck. Lesson learned: don't skip the rinsing part.

boekje met vilten omslagbook with felted cover

Het omslag van dit boekje is door Hermine gevilt terwijl ze aan mij uitlegde hoe ik het vilten moest aanpakken. Ze wilde er graag een een-katern boekje in hebben en dat is het dan ook geworden.
The cover of this book is felted by Hermine while she explained to me how to felt. She asked me to sew a one-section book in it and that's what I did.

Genaaid met een cahiersteek die ik een beetje heb opgeleukt door de kruissteekjes aan kop en staart. Met die kruissteekjes heb ik de gevilte rug vastgezet. Het formaat van het vilt is ong. 13,5x13,5 cm.
Hermine gaat zelf nog een sluiting aan het boekje maken, dus binnenkort zal het zeker ook op haar eigen blog verschijnen. Maar pas na zondag want eerder heeft ze het lekker nog niet :)
Sewn with a pamplet stitch, adjusted with cross stitches on the head and tail. The felted black spine is attached to cover with those cross stitches. The measurement of the felt is appr. 5 1/2 x 5 1/2".
Hermine will make a closure to the book herself, so I'm sure it will appear on her blog sooner or later. Not before next sunday though, because she will only receive it by then :) 

Het katern had ik voorgeperst om de rugvouw er goed strak in te hebben maar met het naaien en door het vilt trok het weer wat open. Omdat ik het vilt niet in de pers wilde doen (dan wordt het zo plat en da's niet mooi) heb ik het boekje tussen twee plankjes geschoven met een lekker zware klomp lood er op. Het hielp, want de rugvouw is weer veel vlakker geworden en het vilt is nog mooi poezelig.
I pre-pressed the one section before sewing, but with the sewing and the thickness of the felt it opened a little. Because I didn't want to press the felt (it would be flattened to much) I put the book itself between boards with a lead bar on top. It worked, the book is much more flat and the felt is still lovely and fuzzy.

viltenfelting

Hermine heeft me de eerste beginselen van het natvilten bijgebracht. Heel leuk om te doen en ik kweek er ook nog eens spierballen mee, super!
Hermine showed me yesterday how to wet felt. Fun to do and my arms got a much needed workout as an added bonus!

Ik ben van plan het als boekomslag in te zetten. Hermine heeft ook zo'n lapje gevilt en dat gaat ook al een boekomslag worden, wat een toeval hè? *lol*
I'm planning to make it into a book cover. Hermine felted a piece too and that one will be a book cover too, how's that for coincidence *lol*
